Virgin Atlantic to announce new US route

Fri Dec 03, 2021 2:23 pm

To be announced in the coming weeks, and will cover a mix of leisure and business demand. Perhaps a return to ORD? PHX? PDX?

I would think PDX, to compete against BA, which is expected to start service next year. DL operated it and did well, pre-Covid with a 763.

A 787 matchup between BA and VS on the PDX-LHR route!

It's not clear why going up against BA on a thin route would be a good plan, especially when BA has the connections beyond LHR that VS lacks.

ORD has never really worked for VS, nor DL either, which attempted CDG there in the past. Probably something strategic, maybe AUS, or a destination with DL focus.

I would have to think if it's business and leisure orientated route then it has to be a hub or someplace like DEN or PDX

The article specifically mentioned a mix of business and leisure… so why would anyone suggest DTW or MSP, IAH etc as they lack the leisure component? It’ll probably be DEN, AUS or SAN. Something with a good mix of leisure and business.

Because DTW and MSP cater to both segments of the market through connections. I agree with you on DEN and SAN but not so much AUS. I don't think many people are plotting a leisure vacation to AUS.

It could be SLC, great connections with DL, big winter sports leisure market, it is growing rapidly in terms of business as well.

SAN is my other guess

Definitely will not be IAH. Even though now would be a great time to attempt to break into the IAH market while UA and BA have reduced schedules I suppose. Even with that said...other cities fit the VS bill more. My bet is DEN or AUS.

MSP and DTW cater towards outbound tourism to London for sure, but not the other way around that’s for sure. I imagine VS will want a destination that’s strong both ways, a place UK residents wanna visit. So DEN, SAN etc.

Your mention of connections via DTW, the comment made by the COO makes it sound like VS wants to add a totally new destination to London in regard to the entire DL/VS joint venture network. So DTW and MSP would be redundant.

That winter sports leisure market is not going to attract many Europeans (and yes, Brits are Europeans as well). With the Alps as the winter sports area of Europe nearby nobody is going to fly halfway across the planet to get just the same they can get nearby. When Europeans go on winter sports they mostly go to France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland or Italy. On top of that there are winter sports resorts in Norway and Sweden as well.

The winter sports market around Salt Lake City caters to Americans only, it's too far for people from elsewhere. Same goes for Denver.

No, that flight was moved up to SEA. So DL and VS will both operate SEA-LHR, and compete against BA and AA.

While nowhere near the same numbers there are still a decent amount of people travelling long haul for winter sports. Finnair added Sapporo partly because of winter demand.

Many European resorts are not going to have a good winter - Austria is locked down, and others are introducing more restrictions so some people will have to look further afield. The US isn’t introducing quarantine and only requiring additional testing so it could work.

Didn't DL just take over from AF on ORD-CDG for one or two winter seasons? I remember it being a metal-neutral JV swap, and eventually AF took back over on a year-round basis. I wouldn't rule ORD-LHR out entirely, but I do think that's probably less likely than SAN, AUS, or TPA.

I second that SLC is a possibility - DL hasn't been flying it's own SLC-LHR, and my guess is LHR is one of SLC's biggest international markets. Plus the obvious connections to the DL hub.

But hoping to see something more interesting that hasn't been tried in the past.

European resorts probably capture most of the winter sports business for Europeans, but Spain, Portugal and Greece exist, but Brits still fly to Miami, California, and the Caribbean to take beach vacations, so there is probably some market for it.

PDX was listed in BA's recent LHR slot application for Summer 2022.

That's not BA confirmation though as it could simply be squatting. We'll see.

Just a few quick thoughts in support of VS maybe coming to SAN.

> In the past, Virgin has expressed interest in serving SAN, heaviest years ago after Zoom exited the SAN-LGW market -- along with all their other markets! -- and before BA made another attempt at serving SAN.
> SkyTeam has never had an intercontinental route out of SAN. (DL has occasionally and briefly served Mexico from SAN but nothing beyond that.)
> BA is apparently increasing their SAN-LHR route to Daily as of next Wednesday, 12/8. (Unless recent covid events change those plans.) They only returned to the SAN-route in mid-October so that's a pretty quick increase back to a daily flight. I would like to think it also indicates traffic is increasing nicely in the SAN-Europe markets.
> Pre-covid, BA was offering daily 747 service for at least half the year from SAN, alternating with 773 service the other half; the route was scheduled to go year-round with 747 service in March 2020's summer sked until covid came on strong and the route was suspended...
> The cruise industry is continuing its strong recovery in SAN this winter, adding further leisure incentive for Virgin to begin service here.
> To the best of my knowledge, SAN's incentive package is now in place for any new service to Europe.
> Our relatively new FIS facilities have plenty of room for a lot more int'l service at SDIA!

I realize that none of these by itself is an overwhelming reason for VS to begin serving SAN but taken all together, I see it as a definite possibility!

It’s not ORD or DTW

Virgin have strong London/UK point of sale and no onward connections, so I would look at strong O&D markets from LON. They are saying business and leisure, Virgin likes "sexy" destinations, so places like AUS or SAN do make some sense. Equally DTW and MSP aren't quite so logical as DL could just add a frequency.

Equally they haven't said its a route from London....

The cost of skiing in the Alps and the Pyrenees can be very high during UK school holidays. The UK holidays and half-terms are fairly close to France as well from what I have observed over the years. So peak is very peak and the slopes are very busy. I have known people who have found skiing in the US and Canada to be cheaper than a week in France with their children during school holidays.

I was talking about Brits in particular. I’m aware MSP punches pretty well in regard to European service with Condor, DL, Aer Lingus, AF and Icelandair. Although BA not serving MSP says a lot imo about attractiveness to Brits for a MSP vacation.

Knowing VS, it will probably be a route already served by BA which they hope to take traffic from, can’t see if being anything new, most of the major cities, pre COVID, were pretty much served by AA, BA,DL, UA & VS.
